Abstract:

The effects of leaf development on anthocyanin synthesis induced by high light and excited energy distribution were investigated via the analysis of gas exchange, chlorophyll a fluorescence, and reflectance spectrum and leaf structure with Ocimum basilicum seedlings. We observed that shading caused significant decrease in leaf thickness and anthocyanin content. When transferred from low to high light, leaves developed under shading had lower anthocyanin content. Moreover, net photosynthetic rate (Pn) and the maximum quantum yield of photosystem II photochemistry (Fv/Fm) in leaves developed under shading condition were depressed markedly, and then recovered gradually. During this period, excessive excited energy was mainly dissipated by thermal dissipation. However, leaves developed under high light had higher net photosynthetic rate and slight photoinhibition under high light. In addition, with the increase of anthocyanin content, non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) was significantly depressed. Therefore, we thought that the light induction of anthocyanin synthesis is influenced by leaf development, which further changes the distribution of excited energy when seedlings transferred from shading to high light.
